To My Father

I can’t help but recognize my dad on this special day.   IMG_3652

This is the man that coached almost all of my soccer teams when I was little.
He is responsible for my flat feet and double-jointed fingers & elbows
He taught me to laugh at the challenges in life and always be true to myself.
My dad decided to serve a two year LDS mission at the age of 19 when his family was not active in the church and his father nor older brother ever served a mission.
He was on the waiting list for Harvard Undergrad.
He is the smartest man and the most eloquent speaker I know.
He is the man I wanted my husband to be like (I am so lucky B has some of his qualities!).
He should be a professional dancer and charades player.
He loves my mom unconditionally and that’s the best thing he can do as a father of four daughters.

Friday I’m in Love: Arrow Inspired Date Night

This week’s summer date night is brought to you by B and inspired by Arrow.
Have you ever seen Arrow? It is a superhero series on the CW. I was a little skeptical at first but have been getting really into it lately.  It recently wrapped up its’ second season and was renewed for a third (first season is currently available on Netflix). Anyways enough about my current tv obsession…

B invited me on a surprise date night last week and it was so creative I thought I would share. The date began with dinner at Vaso Azzurro (a local Italian restaurant located in downtown Mountain View). The food was delicious. I chose  Picatta Con Erbe Aromatiche and B chose the salmon. The flavors were fresh and authentic. The live jazz music contributed to a great meal. I hear their pasta is homemade so I will have to give it a try the next time we come. The dessert menu was diverse and lust worthy.  Overall, it was a lovely experience and I would rate Vaso Azzurro 3.5 out of 5 stars (it really was quite tasty but as I mentioned before I come from a family of food snobs).

After dinner we raced over to this warehouse looking building in Palo Alto. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. B had taken me to Palomo Archery where we would learn the art of archery (I knew B loved Arrow from the beginning but had no idea it would inspire him so).

photo 3 photo 4

We had a hour long archery lesson (archery is actually more tiring than it looks). Our instructor, Peter, taught the very basics and then let us try it out. I was pretty nervous and a little intimidated. The bow was harder to pull back than I thought it would be. I just tried to remember everything I learned and had fun with it. Now I know why Katniss was so praised for her skills. It would take a lot of concentration and practice for me to ever shoot something that is moving.

B was a natural. He was shooting the farther target the second he was able to practice on his own. He could have been Arrow’s sidekick. B encouraged me that we needed this skill in case the zombie apocalypse ever became a reality.

robin ben robin wemmyThen B insisted that we must become like Robin Hood and wear the arrows on our back with the hat on our head. I will tell you I did feel a little BA (especially with my hair in a braid like Katniss, which was not planned). We both love learning new things so it was a great time had by all.
The night ended with ice cream and an Arrow episode of course.

Thanks for reading and cheers to the weekend!

It’s A Love Story

One of my favorite posts to read on other blogs is how they met their significant other. I think personality traits shine through when this story is told and helps you to know the “hand behind the pen”.

Ben and I differ on the exact time in which we met. He claims it was in a Business Math class at the University of Utah during my first semester. Apparently, I was too wrapped up in my group of friends to notice the “skater boy” sitting in the back of the class. I do not recall this event taking place so will start from where I remember us to have met.

It was my second year at the U and I had decided to take a religion class in the middle of the day (as a filler between my academic classes). It was literally at the most random time (3:30pm on Monday + Wednesday I believe). The class was rather small because of this but the instructor was enthusiastic so I thought it would be a good use of time. Either the first or second day, this boy sat next to me (mind you this class was very small and so there were many open seats). I didn’t think much of it because he didn’t speak one word to me. The same boy continued to sit by me every class but didn’t say anything. I am not overly outgoing so I didn’t really think to speak to him either.

A couple weeks went by and I was getting used to his strong silent presence. Then one day I was sitting out in a study area close to the classroom because the other class had not been let out (I tend to be early for everything) and my mystery guy walks by on his cellphone and points at me then motions to come to class. He gives me this huge smile. I don’t know why but it gave me instant butterflies. I whispered (because he was on the phone) that the classroom was not available yet and he proceeded to walk towards the room. There was the ice breaker.

We started chatting constantly during class (apologies to our teacher) and struck up a great friendship. We talked before and after class for a while but there never seemed to be enough time (I always had to race to my Art class which was right after). I could talk to Ben about anything and we seemed to have a lot in common. He made me laugh every time I talked with him (this was not a polite laugh, I usually cried I was laughing so hard). He also intrigued me so much. Ben is very different that anyone I had previously dated (style, interests, etc.).

My group of friends decided that we should organize a group date to the Jazz game and I immediately thought of Ben. He was flirting with me constantly but never seemed to make a real move so I thought this could be an easy way to hang out outside of class. I was trying to get the courage to ask him one day during class (I had never asked anyone on a date before) and then Valentines Day (the movie- the one with every celebrity imaginable) some how got brought up. I was shocked to have heard he had seen it. I asked, “Do you have a girlfriend or something?”. He said “yes”. I COULD NOT believe it. My heart sank a little bit but I didn’t let him see. I continued to date around and be his friend. I put a little distance between us.  Maybe he was brought into my life to be a great friend to me.

Then one day, my car was in the shop ( I slid on black ice — one of the perks of driving in the snow) and Ben offered to take me home after class so I didn’t have to wait for public transportation.   We proceeded to walk to his car. I remember rap blasting when he turned on the car ( loved that since it is usually my genre of choice). The car ride was less than 10 minutes long but it felt like forever and seconds at the same time. Somehow we exchanged phone numbers at the end of it.

I called my girlfriend, Ashlee, who is one of my very best friends and was attending school in Indiana. I told her about Ben and the dilemma I faced. I didn’t get it. I still had butterflies when I hung out with him but didn’t want to be that girl. I told Ashlee how we were just great friends but part of me always wondered if there would be more. We concocted a plan to see if there would ever be more with Ben. I was so nervous to follow through but Ashlee was cheering me on.

I text Ben about something random to initiate a texting conversation. It was go time. I asked him ” If you had three wishes what would they be?” He mentioned family, financial success, and health (all great answers to my insanely random question). Ben turned the question to me and I said something about traveling and financial success. “My last wish is that you were single”. Now I know that can be looked at as aggressive and hurtful to the other woman but I had to let him know I was interested for my own sanity. He had some diplomatic response (as to not show any disloyalty to his current flame but didn’t make me feel stupid). I felt bad after and wondered if it was the right thing for me to do.

A couple days later, I received a text from Ben reading “Your third wish just came true”. I was elated and felt guilty at the same time. I told him I hoped this was not because of me and I didn’t want this to be our start. He told me he had not dated the girl for long and knew in the back of his mind for the last month that he needed to end it. I gave him the extra push. He would have broken it off one way or another.

We continued to be friends. Our first hang out outside of class was a couple weeks later at my apartment. He agreed to watch Gossip Girl with me (since I said it was a show that could not be missed). Gossip Girl aired at 7pm and Ben did not leave till 1am. We talked that long. Ben did not make one move on me. We simply got to know each other even deeper. I knew after that night that he would be my husband.

We continued to date every chance we could. We became official on March 19, 2010. I, unfortunately, moved home for the summer but we agreed we wanted this for the long haul so we dated long distance for three months (I was even in Europe for 2.5 weeks where all we could do was email)! It felt like the longest three months of my life but, Ben was good about inviting me on video dates every week. I fell in love and I fell in love hard.  He made me feel alive.

The rest you could say is history. Ben asked me to marry him at my favorite restaurant in Salt Lake City (Franck’s) on January 7, 2011. We then married in the San Diego LDS Temple on May 28, 2011. Looking back, I thought it was the best day of my life but now I see that every day I am married to my love is the best day.

Pluto’s

Ready for another lunch hot spot in Palo Alto?
Pluto’s

photo 4
Pluto’s offers fresh sandwiches, salads, dessert bars all within budget (I am talking a fresh entree size salad with toppings for $7.50)! I either like to build my own salad or sandwich but they do have signature dishes that everyone raves about. Plutos even cooks a turkey every day to slice meat for sandwiches. How do I know this? Because they slice it right in front of you! Talk about fresh!

The service is quick even though there always seems to be some what of a line (which may be a good sign). There is a bar area that faces the street and I love sitting there on my lunch break to people watch. Not to mention, the bright colored furniture always makes the space feel so happy and inviting. Pluto’s is a staple when eating lunch in Palo Alto!

Don’t forget to indulge yourself with their Saturn’s Garlic Potato Rings or Orbital Onion Rings with Pluto’s BBQ dipping sauce!

imagetrying to show B my “smizing” skills. if only i had it down as well as the olsens.

Here it is. The moment you have all been waiting for…
An outfit post with the shirt featured in my “Summer Whites” post. I got it a couple days ago and love it. I love how feminine yet classic it is. I chose to style the top two different ways to show how it can easily be dressed up or down. Do note it is a little on the shorter side so don’t know if I would wear it with my white low rise pants again. I think a high rise pant would better suit it. I know I mentioned I would pair it with boyfriend jeans but i have a secret for you…
I don’t own boyfriend jeans. I always think about buying them but worried they are too much of a fad to invest in (and my jean drawer is currently spilling over). Maybe if I see a good cheap pair I will indulge myself but for now I will stick to the iconic skinny jean.

How do you style your summer whites?

Virgin Mint Mojito

IMG_20140605_183111

Although I don’t drink alcohol, I do still make some of the classic drinks because of the great flavors that come together. One of my favorites is a mint mojito. I instantly feel refreshed and in a summer state of mind, which is definitely necessary on a Monday!

Virgin Mint Mojito:
15 mint leaves
1 teaspoon raw sugar
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Ice
4 ounces chilled ginger ale (you can use club soda or sparkling water as well)

Directions:
1 In a glass, muddle/crush the mint, sugar, lime juice and Simple Syrup.
2 Add ice.
3 Top with the ginger ale/club soda/sparkling water.
4 Enjoy!

Friday I’m In Love: Summer Date Night Ideas

I live for the summer.
I live for those long summer evenings and the warm summer mornings. I live for the sun shinning and the bronzed skin. I live for the perfectly ripened avocados, mangos, peaches, huckleberries, etc. (the list goes on and on). But, most of all I live for summer love.

summer-date

Summer date nights are different. You are more adventurous and one with nature. You want to soak up the last moments of sun that the evening has to offer. You let loose a little more and think in your head “so what it’s summer?”.  I have decided in honor of this amazing season I will post summer date night ideas every week to make this summer an unforgettable one.

photo 1-2

B and I love games and one of the best two player games is yahtzee. So we grabbed a blanket and headed to a park a block away from our home to enjoy the sun and some competition. I also love Mojitos (virgin that is) so we decided to bring that too . The fresh mint and lime combination just scream summer to me.  Check back next week for the recipe.

Cheers to the weekend!

Okay, how could I not? It was just too perfect and everyone has to love Mean Girls.

It may be almost officially Summer but, in the bay area it is still chilly in the evenings and somewhat gloomy during the day (thanks June gloom). So to keep warm but also embrace the season I wear my brightest colors and hope for hotter days and warmer nights ahead.

What are your go to looks to embrace the new season?

A Romantic Evening in the Valley

Although technically we celebrated our wedding anniversary earlier this month with B Spears, something special still had to be done on the 28th because I think everything in life should be celebrated to the fullest. And what better way to do so than with beautiful french food at Le Papillon?

photo (1)

If I had to pick, I would eat french food for every meal. It is my favorite cuisine (Japanese is a close second). I love the rich flavors of perfectly prepared French food.  I love how the French make the meal an experience in and of itself. I love how dessert is pondered over as thoroughly as the main dish.
…and I think I could live off of baguettes and cheese for weeks.

It was my first time at Le Papillon and it was unforgettable. I was actually introduced to this restaurant by my parents who were in San Jose for a Radiohead concert (yes, random) and decided to take a chance on Le Papillon. They couldn’t stop raving about it and even gave me a gift card for my birthday so there was no excuse not to partake. The menu is structured by courses and you choose the price of your meal by how many courses you would like to eat. We picked four over the standard three because we wanted to honor the French and make this an event!

To start off the chef prepares several “amuse-bouche” (a bite size hors d’oeuvre) to prepare (and amuse) our pallets for the larger courses that are to come. My favorite amuse-bouche was a goat cheese and beet bite.

I won’t bore you with all the details of everything we ate but I will say my favorite course was dessert. It was a chocolate fudge bar with crystallized caramel on top accompanied with chilled coconut cream. I would rate the dessert alone a 8.7.
B’s favorite dish was the sword fish with fried potatoes and crisp kale.

Overall, I would rate Le Papillon 4 stars. The service and atmosphere was top notch and the food tasted as good as it was beautiful. I hope to return someday.

Friday I’m in Love: Summer Whites

summer-whites

Don’t you just love that song by The Cure? I still think of it on most Fridays while getting ready for the day. Did you guys ever use AOL Instant Messenger? That was THE WAY to communicate in middle school. For a little while, I would change my profile every day of the week to match The Cure’s song. Monday you can fall apart…Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart… oh man my profile probably made no sense but at the time I thought it was so witty! Anyways, I digress..

This Friday I am in love with summer whites! I really love to wear white for any season but there is something about the crisp look of those summer whites that gets my heart beating a little faster.

1. Lace Parasol Umbrella (Koyal) – This may seem a little unnecessary, but I imagine using this umbrella while playing a game of croquet (believe it or not we do have a croquet set) or maybe just to shade myself while taking a scenic walk. It sounds so lovely and old fashioned. This particular umbrella is found through a whole sale user so you can get a discount if you buy in bulk. Couldn’t you see a dozen bridesmaids holding these beauties at a southern inspired wedding (I used to be a wedding planner if you couldn’t tell ha)?

2. Engineered Lace Tee (Piperlime) – And the laced white summer pieces continue…ON SALE in all sizes and free returns! You can thank me later. I see myself pairing it with boyfriend jeans or a pink skirt. Maybe I will do an outfit post once it arrives!

3. Eva Lace Maxi Skirt (Piperlime) – I love maxi skirts. They are a great staple piece to dress up or down. I would pair this skirt with the perfect chambray top and sandals. Or part of me would like to try it with the lace shirt above for a monochromatic look. It could be the perfect outfit for a romantic night on the town. Lace makes everything more romantic.

4. Touch of Glam Sandals (Forever 21) – Forever 21 always carries my favorite trendy sandals and they last longer than I expect.  Can’t go wrong with a price point like that!

5. Printed Leather Clutch (Gap) – I love the faint stripe detailing on this clutch. And what do you know… it is on SALE as well.  I need more clutch options in my wardrobe. Currently, I am a tote girl but man does that get heavy.

I long to have all these summer pieces in my closet. But,it wouldn’t be entirely unreasonable to do (considering 3 of the items are under $50).

What are your favorite summer whites?
