Tis The Season

this season is so merry and bright.
below are a few links that are currently making me joyful this holiday season.

tis-the-season-to-be-jolly

christmas movies : who knew netflix had such a great selection? i love the array of older christmas classics. think i may have to cozy up with b and watch one of these one night soon (when he isn’t working like a mad man).

darling gift tags : i love the font, the pretty colors and the sayings she selected for these gift tags. and the best part? she provides a free printable. thanks a million, alexis! i used this free printable for gift tags last year.

festive cookie recipes : my sister swears by smitten kitchen and this pecan florentine with eggnog filling recipe looks completely scrumptious. i love eggnog (homemade preferrably) and if you do too, i made these eggnog cupcakes a couple years ago which were a hit during a white elephant christmas party.

hot chocolate bar cart : this solidifies the fact that i need a bar cart asap. bar carts aren’t just for alcoholic beverages anymore!

the reason for the season : with the hustle and bustle that comes along with christmas, sometimes it is hard to remember the true reason for the season and that is christ’s birth. this free printable would be a great addition to my or any holiday decor.
i also love the interview with the designer and how she explains what christmas means to her.

holiday greetings : another great part of the season is receiving christmas cards in the mail. oh holiday cards make my heart so happy. i love to see pictures of people that i love and read updates on their lives. don’t want to send a picture? these are the best holiday card options around.

what is your favorite part of the holiday season?

Guide to Colorado Springs: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

promise me you will go to the cheyenne mountain zoo if you ever travel to colorado springs, okay?

i have been to a number of zoos in my day (phoenix, san diego, la to name a few) and none compare. i know what i am saying may be crazy because all you hear about is how amazing the san diego zoo is and although it may be bigger, the quality of animals and experiences available is unparalleled at the cheyenne mountain zoo. and one reason it may be so amazing is it is privately owned. something to think about…

unnamed-26

anywho. i had the opportunity to get up close and personal with a tower (group of giraffes = a tower… i can’t make this stuff up).  like literally i was cuddling, feeding and kissing these adorable giraffes and was in complete heaven. right after that experience, i joked that the only way this day could get better was if i got to feed an elephant as well.
do note, you are able purchase leaves of lettuce from the hut to feed to the giraffes and i believe it was $2. also, don’t be the rookie and give them a full leaf. you want the experience to last forever so break up the lettuce into smaller pieces.

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

if you look very closely you can see the giraffe’s abnormally long tongue as i was feeding him. such an amazing experience.
yes there are some other zoos that let you feed the giraffes (phoenix is one) but i have never seen anything where you get to get this up close and personal.

and i think this giraffe might have had a crush on b because he had no food and all this giraffe wanted was some loving from him.

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

fast forward 30 min to when we approach the elephants’ home and see they are allowing visitors to feed them. as you may have guessed, i was on cloud nine.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

elephants actually use their trunk much like fingers when taking the food from you. i though it would be more like a vacuum.

and i think my face says it all. i was completely giddy.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

we also enjoyed seeing the hippos, tigers, leopards, a baby orangutan, gorillas and sloths.

and then we got to watch a grizzly bear swim around and attempt to catch a fish. it was incredible. i had never seen a grizzly bear before.

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

we all agreed that this was our best zoo experience of all time. cheyenne mountain zoo even has better food than the average zoo. so if you are going to do anything in colorado springs, go here (oh and also garden of the gods)

what is your favorite zoo?

Guide to Colorado Springs: The Broadmoor

Guide to Colorado Springs

a couple days after thanksgiving, we decided to explore the beautiful city of colorado springs a little further by heading south to the older, more established part of town.

first stop, the broadmoor hotel.
it is the only five star hotel in colorado springs and they just put up their christmas decorations so we knew it would be a sight to see walking the grounds.
it felt old and historic. the furniture was lavish and the greenery was perfectly manicured. that view in the first picture is from the courtyard of the hotel. can you imagine peaking out of your window to that?
my dad vowed he would have to stay here one day soon.

Guide to Colorado Springs: The Broadmoor Hotel

there were about eight christmas trees scattered around the interior of the property and each had a different color scheme. all i wanted to do was race home and decorate our christmas tree after seeing these beauts.

i also loved those massive fireplaces. imagine sitting by one of those during a snow storm.
it would be dreamy.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

a poinsettia christmas tree? what a lovely idea.
oh and i was not able to capture a great picture but they also had a life-size gingerbread house that was completely edible.
it took me back to my childhood days of wandering the ritz carlton laguna niguel during the christmas season.

those two munchkins melt my heart. i can’t wait for my sister to add another boy into the mix come march.

it felt amazing to be reunited with these sisters of mine. they are the bees knees and i am so blessed to have 3 built in best friends.

the broadmoor hotel in colorado springs is incredibly stunning and a perfect place to stay or visit. there are a million different reading nooks i would have loved to curl up in and a great restaurant to indulge your appetite. hotel rates can be more affordable when booking during the week. b and my brother in law calculated that it would cost about $70k to live at the hotel year round. and we decided that was a pretty great price given the amenities and location (yet still incredibly unrealistic unless you are kevin mccallister). another bonus is the valet is complimentary.

three cheers for the broadmoor.
i am crossing my fingers my dad invites me along when he heads back to the broadmoor hotel.

weekend recap

we started the weekend festivities a little early on thursday evening by heading over to our local tree lot to pick out our fresh christmas tree.
i have grown up with a live christmas tree and it has always been one of my favorite traditions to pick a new one out every year.
b grew up with fake christmas trees but he now sees the error in his ways.
i love the smell, the tradition and the diversity of picking out a christmas tree every year.
i do envy those that can just whip out their pre lit christmas tree and start decorating on a whim and maybe i will give into fakery once we have a family and water is being spilled everywhere but for now a tiny live tree it is.

i begged my parents every year to get a flocked christmas tree.
growing up in southern california you never really see snow so you gotta take what you can get. they always denied my request– claiming it is too much of a mess. now i beg b every year and he has the same response…

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

well at least i can hideaway in a forest of flocked trees and pretend i am in narnia for 30 seconds.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

that tiny beauty is our tree for the season. i love how full and shapely it was for being so small in height. b loved that it could fit in our trunk.

this season makes me giddy.

on friday, we went out to los gatos for dinner with our friends. following dinner, we decided to make gingerbread houses. i have only ever made gingerbread houses with graham crackers so this was an extra special treat.

great friends + excellent thai food + gingerbread house constructing = one perfect friday night in december.

saturday it was time to christmas shop and decorate the tree. i think i may have overestimated the amount of christmas lights i needed to fill a 2 foot tree…

i think christmas crafts may be one of my favorite parts of the season. this sunday was filled with fresh rosemary wreaths and a pom pom garland.

Guide to Colorado Springs: Garden of the Gods

although we did tend to stay indoors cooking and game playing, there were a few fun activities we just had to experience while we were in colorado springs.
garden of the gods was one of them.

unnamed-11

garden of the gods is a national natural landmark of red rock formations. they are said to have been created during a “geological upheaval” along a natural fault line millions of years ago.  there is nothing quite like it in the rocky state. although it did remind me a little bit of southern utah. moab / st. george anyone?

Processed with VSCOcam with s2 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with s2 preset

there were a fair amount of visitors when we arrived at the garden of gods and so we ended up having to park about a mile away. not to worry though, there are pedestrian trails all across the park to the main formations. it was a flat and paved walkway with beauty all around.

Processed with VSCOcam with s2 preset

we were able to tour the main formations in about an hour (but touring with young kids takes more time so you could probably do it more quickly if you want). there were spots to rock climb if you were the appropriate experience level and had a permit. b was jealous.

side note… i feel like we are all dressed for a different occasion / weather? b for an intense hike, sisters for a casual walk around the mall. littlest sister for a brisk walk around the city and so forth. ha that is the tates for you!

Processed with VSCOcam with s2 preset

garden of the gods is gorgeous and a must see if you are in the colorado springs area.
oh and just in case you are like where the heck is colorado springs… it is about an hour away from denver.

Thanksgiving in the Rockies

this thanksgiving, we celebrated in the rocky mountains of colorado.
i had never been to colorado before.
we had been through that denver airport numerous times but never actually left and so i was so excited to step foot outside.

my oldest sister hosted our whole family in their brand new home. with all of us traveling to her, she completely took on the task of making 80% of the thanksgiving feast (we helped a little on the day of so we were not completely useless). oh and did i mention she is pregnant? that my friends, is one amazing sister.

my sister is the foodie of the family and so this thanksgiving did not disappoint. she laid out a wonderful menu with many new dishes i will need to add to my repertoire. she cooked all the pies (including crusts) by hand and never skipped a beat. i am completely inspired and need to develop my cooking skills further.

this sister of mine even thought about the tablescape! of course, i took the lead once she gave me the supplies but she picked it all up from the store days before we arrived. every last detail was perfection on this joyous thursday.

she made two different pumpkin pies, pecan and apple with crumble topping. best apple pie i have ever had. and that homemade whip cream made it that much better.

how darling is my little nephew? he kept us all laughing throughout the meal. he is the smartest three year old i know. and although he is usually obsessed with his “lala” (my mom) when we are all together, this time i got a little one on one time with him. he asked me to put him to bed twice in row. i felt so honored. when we were singing songs in bed, i felt like my heart would burst. i love this little.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

last week went by in the blink of an eye. i wish i could relive it all over again. i love my family more than anything on this earth. you can instantly feel love when you are around any one of them. we played games and laughed till we cried every night. i am so incredibly thankful for them and all they have taught me. they are all my best friends. i just wish we could see them more often.

thanksgiving makes my heart full. it is such a great time to remember everything we have.
i am thankful for the kids i teach at church because i feel christ’s love when i teach them.
i am thankful for my job because i really work for some of the smartest and most kind people out there.
i am thankful for our home.
i am thankful for my church.
i am thankful for my bay area friends.
i am thankful for rain and greenery.
i am thankful for my family.
i am thankful for my savior, jesus christ.
and i am especially grateful for my husband, b. he is my sunshine.

Anthropology Inspired DIY Holiday Wreath

now i don’t mean to jump the gun on christmas. i am a firm believer in holding off till after thanksgiving to give thanksgiving its’ time to shine but i had to share this fun diy anthropologie inspired wreath that is perfect for the holidays.

i have been lusting after this anthropologie wreath for years.
yes, years. i actually pinned this wreath two years ago.
i have been on the hunt for a similar wreath (because this is my most favorite wreath i have ever seen) for a more budget friendly price for two years. wow.
then i finally decided i just had to make it.

anthropologie-inspired-pom-pom-holiday-wreath

and although it may not be exactly the same. i think it is pretty darn close and it kept my wallet (and my husband) happy. total cost of this wreath was about $20.

what you will need:
1 styrofoam wreath from michaels*
lots of thick, fluffy white / cream yarn
hot glue gun + glue
red and white striped ribbon for the bow (or any pattern + color you prefer)

*i have also used dollar store wooden wreaths as a base for homemade wreaths in the past but was at michaels and a styrofoam (over by the floral department usually) wreath did the trick. either will work great.

i started off by wrapping the wreath with the yarn so you did not see the styrofoam. then came the time consuming part — making 30 pom poms. i made them all by hand using this tutorial and decided i would need about 3 different sizes to fill in the wreath.
side note… i just found out there are actual machines you can buy to make pom poms and they look relatively affordable so i think i may have to invest.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

so grab a comfy seat and put on your favorite show (mine being gilmore girls) because making 30 poms poms could take 2-3 episodes depending upon how diligent you are. i tend to get a little distracted by lorelai’s one liners.
and see that roll of yarn up there? i liked that kind the best because it was easy to make the pom poms look fully like cotton balls or sheep skin.

after the pom pom creation, i placed them around the wreath and started gluing with my hot glue gun. once everything was firmly glued, i tied a bow and glued that onto my wreath as well.

once completely dry, hang your wreath. unless your door is made of metal like mine (just figured that out and so we need to get something besides a typical nail to hang — any suggestions?). who makes a metal door anyway?

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

oh and while you are enjoying watching gilmore girls and creating pom poms don’t forget to indulge yourself with some warm hot chocolate! this is hello kitty pink hot chocolate. it is not very rich but satisfies my sweet tooth and my girly need for everything to be cute.

weekend recap

you know those people who can instantly make a day fun and happy? that’s what these two do for me.

i have the opportunity of teaching the four year olds at my church on sunday with keri.  it is always the best part of my weekend. i love hearing their crazy stories and feeling their endless energy. one of our darling students will be going to another church and will no longer be able to attend our class on sunday. she is the light of our class. she is everyones friend. she makes me instantly happy with her whispered secrets and contagious smile.
keri and i decided to take her to ice cream as a little send off on saturday. she requested bubblegum flavor so off we went to baskin robbins.  i love this little one and am so happy i was able to teach her and feel of her love.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

isn’t she darling? some kids have old souls and i think she may be one of them. she can connect with people of all ages. we are three peas in a pod (three can happen sometimes right?).

and then there is my darling friend keri that i thank the heavens for. we are so much alike but different. i cherish the days of christmas party planning and co teaching. you may remember she was the friend who got me to participate in our church’s talent show. every girl needs a keri as her friend.

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

so saturday was filled with christmas lights, target runs and a girls afternoon with the two best.

for sunday we decided to host an afternoon of games + brunch with three other couples.
can you tell i love hosting? i love the planning that goes into it with the menu and decor. i love opening our home and creating memories. i love strengthening friendships.

and i swear i always forget to take a picture of the yummy food. i guess i am just too excited to start eating! i decided to try two new recipes (one paula deen and one ina) this time around and think one was a hit.  can you guess which one?

yes, ina. always ina. the paula recipe was pretty good but for some reason it has the entree served cold and i think i would have preferred it hot.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

oh and can you believe those flowers up there are made from coffee filters? my sister and her husband made them for me for my birthday a couple years ago and i use them all the time. so pretty and a little less fuss than real flowers. and with us leaving for the holiday, i didn’t want flowers to die while we were gone.

all in all it was a great weekend with great friends and one amazing husband. i love this time of my life. i am soaking up every moment because you never know when things could change (i feel like our lives are ever-changing).

just call us silicon vallians

okay i think it is completely official that we belong in silicon valley.
but let’s not get ahead of ourselves on why just yet. let’s talk about what a lovely november  weekend we had.

saturday morning i woke up with a craving for waffles and pancakes and french toast oh my.
finally settled on french toast since i had a honey wheat baguette to use. but to make it just a little fancier (and more fattening) , we decided to replace milk for heavy whipping cream and add a couple of tablespoons of honey to the batter. it was heavenly. the baguette style bread + heavy whipping cream is the wow factor. do you guys have any secrets to spicing up french toast?

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

oh and don’t be fooled, those lovely blooms were not arranged by me (i wish). i actually coordinated an event at work and we had left over centerpieces so i took a couple home to freshen up my dinning room. i would strongly suggest karen of huckleberry designs for all your flower needs in the bay area. she was a doll and so artistic. she also worked really well within my budget.
she inspired me to perhaps take a flower design class. it is so amazing what great florists can throw together with a drop of a hat and i would love to learn at least a couple tricks of the trade.

okay, so you obviously are thinking how on earth are they silicon vallians? most people around the world adore flowers and eat french toast. but that is not why.

after breakfast, we headed to the chevy dealer to test drive the spark. we have been researching electric cars for a couple weeks because of the great leasing deals you can get and my commute to work is really wearing on me (i am talking 15 miles = 1 hour and that is ridiculous.)
we test drove the leaf last week and enjoyed it a lot more than we ever thought we would. in order to make a sound decision, we had to look at the competitors and so we happened upon the chevy dealership this sunny saturday morning.
you guys this sounds a bit crazy because we have two functioning cars and b swore he would never lease a car in his life but we fell in love and are now proud owners of a 2015 chevy spark.
and seriously proud.
it is like a clown car in size and adorably funny looking (similar to a pug puppy in my mind) but it is quick and fully electric! i will have to go into more detail of the benefits of an electric car in another post but after weeks of debating we are completely happy with our decision (and carpool lane here i come).

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

and if you aren’t from silicon valley than the reason this is so huge is i would say about 40% of silicon valley residents drive gas efficient (volts, prius, fiat, smart car) or electric cars. going green is pushed pretty heavy in california.
and we are now a walking stereotype of silicon valley.

and there is no better way to celebrate our new purchase than with in-n-out and pedicures.

how was your weekend?

weekend recap

this weekend we settled into our new place.

our two days consisted of many trips to target and costco for various needed items (christmas lights of course being one of them ha) and hosting our first dinner party!  it is starting to feel like home and i really love that feeling.

saturday morning started off with an early morning donut run to stan’s donut shop in santa clara (less than 2 miles from our home which could be dangerous). it was actually my first time going to stan’s and it won’t be my last. the line was a bit long for 8am on saturday but it was worth it! we tried old fashion, buttermilk and sprinkles. they each tasted so fresh. i loved watching the baker prepare the donuts to be cooked.

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

what is your favorite donut flavor?

i have been in a complete baking mood as of late and decided to make these pumpkin cookies. and although mine did not turn out as pretty as hers they were just as delicious. b is pretty particular about his cookies and he kept on coming back to them so i know it was a recipe to save for future use. we ended up giving away most of the cookies to our neighbors as a way to introduce ourselves and not gain 5 pounds ha. warning lots of butter and shortening in these babies!

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

then sunday morning i was craving these pumpkin chocolate chip pancakes. emily of cupcakes and cashmere has never steered me wrong with a recipe before and this time was no exception. the pancakes were heavy and rich. i couldn’t eat more than two but i enjoyed every bite. b said it was like eating cookies for breakfast in pancake form.

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

so i totally forgot to take a picture with all the amazing food on the table but wanted to document our first dinner party in some way. there are still some items i need in my kitchen to be the perfect host (like charger plates and more of one type of place mat) but that will all come in due time.
it was the first time i got to use my table runner from the oh joy christmas collection and i think it may be a staple for all dinners in the next coming months. i love the neutrality of the piece but paired with the right decor can look holiday-esque.

it was a lovely evening full of laughs, pumpkin cornbread and homemade jeni’s ice cream.

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

yes, pumpkin cornbread. made from the box a la trader joe’s. you just add eggs, milk and oil and you have yourself some delicious pumpkin cornbread. it does not have a strong pumpkin flavor – the spices are what really sets this apart from your traditional cornbread. i usually make cornbread by scratch but i just had to try this trader joe’s creation and it was a gem. everyone was asking me for the recipe so i had to spill the beans. it had more of a cake like consistency than corn bread but it was wonderful. no butter or honey needed.

how was your weekend?
